Legacy Thursday - Spring Flowers (03/21/13)

Nana had more than a green thumb. She had TWO green thumbs and ALL green fingers! That woman knew how to grow flowers! Me? I just kill them. I've never been good at growing plants or animals. My kids are doing ok so far, so I guess raising kids is easier than plants. *hehe*

Nana always knew when to plant flowers, how close together and which ones looked good together. She also wasn't afraid to prune bushes or pick dying blooms off for better looking flowers. I have ALWAYS wanted a yard with beautiful flowers. I want a breathtaking view each time I arrive at my home or look out my windows. I want friends and family to visit and be taken away by the beauty God's plants can provide. I must admit I want my neighbors to be a little jealous.

This year I am going to give it another try. I will document my attempts at flower gardening and the progress I make.

Thinking about Nana and her flowers also makes me think of our walk with God. There are times we get pruned and picked on, but we can choose to "die" or to come through and be more beautiful afterward. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they weather a storm. After experiencing wind and rain the flowers, if not completely broken, will come back to a more vibrant and colorful life than anyone has ever seen. The dirt is washed away and the brightness shines through.
Just as the rays from the sun sends life giving energy to the flowers, so the Heavenly Son has provided life giving energy to our souls, our hearts, our bodies & our minds.
It is also important where we "plant" ourselves. We must make sure that we are surrounding ourselves with Godly things and not those things that can lead us away from God.

These are just a few of Nana's flowers. In celebration of the beginning of Spring I wanted to share some of her flowers. I have MANY more pictures that will be posted over the next few months.
HAPPY SPRING!!

Legacy Thursday - The Beginning

This is my first attempt at a weekly (or almost weekly) series. While praying about this blog I really wanted to use the word "Legacy" in  the title but it just didn't fit no matter how hard I worked on titles for the blog. I then decided to dedicate a section of the blog to Leaving a Legacy. There is a tab titled Leaving a Legacy that will have the link to all Legacy Thursday posts in it.

My Nana (my Mom's Mom) was my earthly best friend. Even though she often "preached" a small sermon to me about rights and wrongs I knew that was her way of guiding me in life. There are many things I learned from her. While I may not remember everything she said I remember some of the most important things she said. But mostly I remember how she lived. The biggest lessons I learned from Nana were the silent ones, the ones that she lived.

9 years later after her death I see her legacy more and more. I couldn't see it while she was living because I was younger and living each moment of life. (At 24 I wasn't very "adult" yet.) Had I reached adulthood and had children I would have seen it better while she was still alive. But I now see it every day. I see it as I struggle to parent the way God would have me to. I see it as I interact with family and friends. I see it as I continue to learn how to manage a large household. I see it in the flowers (flower gardening was one of her favorite things to do). I see it and think of her and her legacy often. I want to leave a strong legacy for my children, their children and so on.

Each week I want to focus on a thought or one of her "quotes" and talk about how it still applies to my life. I want to also talk about how I'm putting forth the effort to teach my children these legacies. Without knowing it, Nana is going to be keeping me accountable with my children.

Today I end with one of her favorite sing-song responses to I love you.

"I love you, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck". She gave hugs freely.

Nana & one her best flowers!
